VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Attend our Volunteer Training and learn more about the dynamics of domestic violence! We offer an exceptional 50 hour on-site training opportunity in the spring and fall of each year. Sign-up now or call Billie Miller, our Volunteer Coordinator, for more information - 206/926-3016.

We also offer a variety of volunteer positions in the Shelter Program, the Community Advocacy Program (CAP), the Transitional Housing Program (THP), and the Administrative Office. Every job is important, and we could not continue without our volunteer staff!

Opportunities include:

    Direct Service:
  • Children's Program: We need YOU to be part of our team providing a safe, supportive environment for children while their moms are in support group. No experience necessary, just a desire to have fun with kids! Your assistance is needed with organizing play and art activities, reporting concerns about a child, tutoring, completing required agency paperwork, and assisting with set-up and clean-up.
  • Social Change Program, two opportunities: Join our Social Change Action Group - Reach out to our community by distributing information, through media and by community organizing. Thriver's Action Group (TAG) - Join other survivors, sharing your story and working towards change through political action, consciousness raising and community outreach.
  • Shelter Program: Advocacy-based counseling, information and referrals for shelter residents and callers to our 24-hour Crisis Line", co-facilitating support groups in the shelter.
  • Community Advocacy Program: Assist with Legal Clinic screenings, court accompaniment and other appointments, perform follow-up client calls, co-facilitate support groups, answer incoming crisis telephone calls.
  • Crisis Line: Volunteers will be trained during the spring and fall volunteer trainings to assist callers on our 24-hour crisis line from either the Shelter (weekends, evenings/nights) or the CAP office (9am-5pm), providing information, referral and advocacy-based counseling.
    Support Services:
  • Administrative Offices: Assist with data entry, typing, filing, mailings, and other office work in support of administrative staff. Special projects as needed, including our annual auction.
  • Facilities team: Assist with gardening, small repairs, errands, laundry and basic upkeep of buildings and grounds at the shelter and THP. Special projects as needed.

Requirements for Direct Service Positions, except childcare, which offers on-site training, include a 40 hour training program held twice a year, spring and fall. All volunteers will complete a screening and information interview, and sign a statement of confidentiality; once training is completed, a commitment of one 4-hour shift per week for one year is expected.

Childcare during support groups, office support and facility care are ongoing volunteer opportunities you might fulfill while waiting for the next training session.
