Survivors of Domestic Violence (continued)

Meet Lera

I was a “mail order bride.” I met my husband through an agency in my home country. When I came to the U.S., my husband controlled my every move and thought. He followed me to the bathroom. I couldn’t even speak in private to my 12 year-old son.

Lera ImageEmotional abuse soon turned into physical violence. My English was very limited then. I was confused and didn’t know where to go, but I wanted out. I found a way to get a temporary protection order against my husband. Then, I found New Beginnings. I was accepted into the Emergency Shelter. They helped me with ESL classes and found a school for my son. We felt safe. But I had to appear in court every month because my husband still tried to control me and get me back. Later, I was able to move into New Beginnings’ transitional housing. The advocates helped me get through my divorce. I got a good job. My son and I are now living in our own home and he goes to a nice school. There is hope. It’s hard. It takes a while to get through all of the steps to get education, jobs, housing and legal procedures. We are so much better now.
